Halal Guys Original Location (Midtown)

Over the years, Halal Guys has become a world-famous chain known for their delicious plates and brightly-colored branding. However, what many may not know is that this cultural icon once began as a humble New York City street food vendor in 1990. Located on 53rd and 6th Avenue in Manhattan’s bustling Midtown district, the original Halal Guys cart still stands to this day, serving countless hungry customers all throughout the day and late into the night.

Initially opening as a hot dog cart founded by three Egyptian founders, Halal Guys soon switched to serving halal food for Muslim taxi drivers. Since then, Halal Guys’ plentiful plates of gyro and chicken over rice with their signature red and white sauces have boomed in popularity, expanding to locations all over the U.S. and the world. With lines stretching across the block all day long at this cart, the original location still boasts a loyal fanbase of customers.

The chicken and gyro plate is a classic, and nothing more needs to be changed about it. For those that haven’t tried it, the dish consists of juicy chopped chicken and pita over a delicious bed of rice. It is accompanied by lettuce and topped with either a white (savory and creamy) or red (spicy; don’t put too much at first if you’re not good with spice) sauce, or both.

So, if you’ve never had Halal Guys before, or if you want to pay homage to the original location where it all began, the original location in Midtown is the perfect tasty meal destination for any food enthusiast or nearby office worker.
