Ole & Steen (Union Square)
Amidst NYC’s countless bakeries and cafes, Ole & Steen stands out for its storied history, dedication to its craft, and an enticing atmosphere.
Founded in 1991 in Copenhagen, the shop’s specialty is the lagkagehuset, or the Danish “layered cake”. While the original store in Denmark is named after the pastry, locations abroad are called Ole & Steen as a nod to the original founders. In fact, the Union Square location is the first one that opened outside of Europe, establishing itself in 2019. Since then, they have opened up four more locations all across Manhattan.
Ole & Steen’s focus is on creating fine Danish pastries while using the highest quality ingredients possible. They stress both simplicity and honesty, a quality that is even reflected in their interior design by opting for long-lasting and sustainable furniture.
And while we were not able to take more pictures due to being in a rush, the interior is beautifully decorated and truly reflects Nordic modernity. Pastries of various kinds are laid out in the storefront and customers can be seen working or chatting while sipping on coffees and eating pastries.
The interior seating area is especially great for those working, as there is ample seating and the interior lends itself to focus and inspiration. The customer service is also a notable charm and is definitely elevated when compared to other cafes in the area.
We highly recommend their pastries (you really can’t go wrong with any of them) and pairing it with a coffee or other drink. Whether you’re on the go like we were, or just stopping by for a moment of unwinding, Ole & Steen is a fantastic bakery that earns its reputation.
