Manpuku (Berkeley)
There aren’t too many places in Berkeley where one can get casual and affordable sushi that is still high quality. Most options consist of restaurants on the pricier side, and while these other establishments do offer takeout, it is not the same experience for the price you pay. Manpuku in Berkeley solves this problem by being the perfect middle ground between affordable, quick, and high-quality sushi options.
Located on College Ave on the far end of the Elmwood shopping area, Manpuku is tucked away in a thin storefront and only denoted by a colorful wooden sign out front. Walk too fast and you might miss it.
The inside opens up to a cozy seating area with a few tables to one side and bar seating on the other. While the seating situation does not lend itself to large groups, it is perfect for a solo meal or a casual date.
However, the real charm is if you’re in a hurry. Manpuku has freshly made rolls and sides ready to go in a cooler by the front door, and all one needs to do is pick them up and pay at the register next to it. The takeout rolls are highly popular though, and options usually dwindle by early lunchtime, so it is advised to come earlier in the day if you want more variety.
While normal sushi, ramen, and even bento boxes are offered, this review will focus on the rolls as their takeout convenience earns its spot in our Bay Area list. The California rolls are noticeably fresh in taste, and the rice especially is to praise. For less than $10 per box, this makes an excellent lunch option if you are in a hurry. Furthermore, as the standard California box comes with twelve pieces, two boxes should be more than enough for most people.
Wanting sushi at odd hours of the day is a real struggle, and we here at Xplorago totally get that. Manpuku is here to satisfy your cravings with casual takeout rolls that won’t break the bank or take too much of your time. A truly underrated gem in Berkeley, Manpuku is an Xplorago-approved favorite.
