Chart House (Cardiff By the Sea)

From an experiential standpoint, many restaurants operate completely independent of their surrounding location and geography. However, Chart House in Cardiff by the Sea is an experience that blends the restaurant experience with the breathtaking views of the beach that it is built on.

Though Chart House is a chain belonging to a large restaurant group, I chose this one for its exceptional and unique positioning on the beach. Growing up my parents were big fans of Chart House, and so I’ve tried many across California, and the Cardiff location certainly has something inimitable and special to it that draws guests time after time.

Situated on the beautiful and serene Cardiff State Beach, the restaurant is nestled amidst a sprawling coastline with long and gentle waves rhythmically rolling in. The inside can best be described as coastal modern, with aquatic-themed decor tastefully adorning the main dining area. Most importantly however, the decor serves to enhance the ocean views, rather than distract the diners from it.

However, the real charm is to get seats by the window in the far side of the restaurant. For an even better experience, I recommend making reservations around or right before the start of sunset, as it is an otherworldly experience. The windows are set right beside large rocks that block the splash, and on some days, the staff will even open them to let the sea breeze in while you dine.

As for the food, they carry a large range of items. Some of my favorite menu items throughout the years are described below:

The mango stack is a popular appetizer that is somewhat like a ceviche dish. It comes with a stack of avocados, shrimp, and mango salsa with a side of plantain chips. It is a refreshing option that isn't too heavy and is loved by many diners.

The coconut crunchy shrimp is part of the “vintage Chart House” menu, which are essentially guest favorites throughout the years. The shrimp is breaded in a way that gives a satisfying crunch when eaten, and is paired with a citrus chili, coconut cream, or soy sauce-based dipping ensemble. It also comes with mango sticky rice which is light and not really that sticky if you are used to more traditional Thai-style sticky rice. This version has more of a fried rice consistency and taste to it.

When going for dessert, there is a “secret” menu option from long ago that is no longer on the menu and is only known by Chart House fans of old. The mud pie is a delicious ice cream and chocolate cake with melted fudge and whipped cream. While the one pictured above is smaller by special request, they are usually giant and also taste much better than the lava cake, which as of now, is the only listed dessert option on the menu.

With all that being said, Chart House in Cardiff by the Sea is an amazing restaurant that combines the senses while eating, making way for a truly unique and memorable dining experience. The best part is that while it is a nice restaurant, guests are sometimes seen dining in casual clothes, so there is no judgment. Furthermore, the staff and their service are exceptional here, and have never let my family or our acquaintances down. So whether you are celebrating a special occasion, or just want a casual lunch while watching surfers catch waves next to you, Chart House in Cardiff by the Sea is an excellent hidden gem of the San Diego area that you must try.
