Ryoko’s (Nob Hill)

Sushi in San Francisco can get expensive, and those who have had experience with the expensive restaurants know that reservations can sometimes seem impossible to get. However, good sushi does not have to cost a kidney and a mental breakdown. In fact, it can even be done better than “traditional” restaurants with a unique flair.

Located on Taylor St. in the Lower Nob Hill neighborhood, Ryoko’s is a cult-classic amongst San Francisco locals. While the compact restaurant can certainly seem unassuming from the outside, guests are led down a staircase into a lively and energetic sub-terranean level dining room.

One of the first things that you’ll notice upon entering is the bar to the left with sushi chefs cutting up fresh fish for the guests in front of them. On the right side, you’ll notice a DJ spinning tracks while diners watch and groove along. The vibe is best described as warm and inviting, yet with a quirky twist that is uniquely San Franciscan at heart. Going further into the dining room, diners engage in lively chatter with each other while enjoying their food.

One thing that is also unique about Ryoko’s is their menu. While more traditional nigiri and roll options are offered, the restaurant tends to present their own, modern spin on classic dishes. This results in dishes that may look and taste different than what one is used to at a sushi restaurant, but I can assure you that they are still delicious and worth trying.

Having visited Ryoko’s countless times over the years, my photos are scattered everywhere, but you cannot go wrong with most of their menu items. Whether you are looking for a trendy and “underground” scene in the city, or trying to impress a first date, Ryoko’s is sure to deliver a unique and memorable experience.
